Twin Coast Cycle Trail (pou herenga tai) Extension

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS
  • Initial Biodiversity Assessment
  • Development of an Ecological Impact Assessment
  • Wetland Assessments
  • Lizard habitat assessments
  • Mapping the ecological information on a plan of the proposed route
  • Working alongside the design team to understand their design, methodology and programme
  • Liaison with iwi and related stakeholders

The 87km long Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail (PHTTCCT) in Northland extends between Horeke in the west and Ōpua in the east and is estimated to take two days to complete across four sections. The PHTTCC Trail currently holds ‘Great Ride’ status and is the only Great Ride north of the Hauraki Region.

The eastern end of the 11km Opua to Kawakawa section has, until recently, been located within the former railway corridor.  The Bay of Islands Vintage Railway Trust (BOIVRT) are reinstating this section of railway and the intention of this project is to build a new cycle trail alongside the Taumarere – Opua section of the railway.

The Twin Coast Cycle Trail aims to deliver a route consistent in quality and experience to enable the route to retain its Great Ride status.

The current rail corridor and proposed cycle route is largely within the Coastal Environment and our team of ecologists have provided an ecological assessment to inform the initial route selection and what wildlife permits and consents may be required. The project is in its early stages and our team will provide ongoing ecological support throughout the design and construction phases.
